When Dedication Waivers & Pumpkin Crepes

James 1:2 (icb)

My brothers, you will have many kinds of troubles. But when these things happen, you should be very happy.

Why is it that our dedication waivers in areas of life that we know are important? For some us, we make a plan to eat healthy but don’t stick to it. Some of us buy a gym membership and stop going after a week. For me, I am so inconsistent with my devotional and prayer time. I’m rushing through life a million miles a minute, trying to do it all, and what I know is important gets put on the back burner, over and over and over again.

But the absolute best part about this relationship I have is that when things start to get shaky in my world, my anxiety creeps in, my controlling self comes out, I’m quietly and lovingly reminded to look at where my heart and my priorities are. It doesn’t require a lightning strike or a devastating blow or a total breakdown; just a little nudge, and so I set off again in pursuit of what this life is really all about. And again, I will fall on my face and need another reminder.

That thought used to embarrass me. I used to think that I was selfish, or that I could never talk about that because people would judge me, or because it’s not what “real Christians” allow to happen. But I see now that this is a blessing; we were designed and created to have a hole that only one relationship can fill, and what an amazing thing that we can go hours, days, months, years, an entire lifetime even, ignoring that relationship, and the second we open our hearts back up, there’s no resentment, no anger, no bitterness, just the same love that’s been waiting for us.

I’m not sure what the point of this message is, other than love. There’s nothing wrong with you and everything wrong with you all at the same time; but you were made perfectly, and created for a relationship that makes everything worth it, and so possible.

Is dedication to prayer, studying the Word, and spending time in relationship with the Lord something you struggle with in this season of life? If so, how do you feel when your time with Him is lacking? Do you notice any changes in yourself?

Ask the Lord to draw you close today and refresh your heart, mind, and soul as you spend time with Him.
