Matthew 6:11 (erv)
Give us the food that we need for today,
Read
This is one of the lines from one of the most famous scriptures, The Lord’s Prayer. Most people are familiar with these few verses, even those who aren’t believers. But I’ve found that when I take the time to look at each verse individually and meditate on it, it changes from a mindless chant to a treasure of knowledge.
In the Lord’s Prayer, Jesus is teaching His disciples how they should pray. In this particular verse, He isn’t just referring to food, although that is included in the meaning here. What Jesus means is that we should ask the Lord to give us what we need to survive today. Not next week. Not next month. Not a warehouse full of food or a retirement plan. Today’s necessities.
Of course there’s nothing wrong with being prepared and planning ahead, but those preparations can not come at the cost of faith. Knowing that God will continue to provide, day after day, even when the accounts are drained and the pantry is empty is a large part of what faith is. It’s believing in what you cannot see.
Every time I start to panic about not having what I need, I have to remind myself that I have everything I need in Him. If a farmer runs out of eggs, he doesn’t worry because he knows he has a chicken. We don’t need to worry about the created when we trust the Creator.
When we don’t have immediate access to the things that meet our needs, we learn to trust God. If we believe that we have all that we need, we’ll never have a reason to look outside of ourselves. Faith is built in the times that we’re hyper aware of our dependance on God. Through those situations, God not only provides what we need today, but He also provides what we need for eternity: complete trust and dependence on Him.
Write
Can you think of a time that God hasn’t provided what you need for the present? What are some of the “future” things that cause you stress and worry? Does this change your perspective on worrying about tomorrow?
Pray
For every belief of independence to be replaced with the undeniable realization of your dependence on God.
