Just Peachy Oatmeal Bake

The Comeback & Just Peachy Oats

Matthew 26:74-75 (tpt)

Peter denied it, and using profanity he said, “I don’t know the man!” At that very moment the sound of a crowing rooster pierced the night. Then Peter remembered the prophecy of Jesus, “Before the rooster crows you will have denied me three times.” With a shattered heart, Peter went out of the courtyard, sobbing with bitter tears.

We all have moments in our lives that we wish we could take back. I imagine this moment is one that Peter certainly wishes had never happened. Even though Jesus told him that it would happen, Peter was still shocked and devastated when it actually did. The same man who, in Matthew 26:35, said, “I will never say that I don’t know you! I will even die with you!” had just denied Jesus three times.

I can almost feel that same pit in my stomach that I imagine Peter was experiencing at that moment. You know, the one that goes along with the shameful thought of “oh man, I really just screwed up”? That’s the one. I know it well. Most of us do.

It turns out that Peter knew that feeling as well. And I think that we learn so much about Peter in the Bible because he’s an example of how much God loves us and uses us, regardless of our completely messy humanness.

Peter went on to change the lives of countless people by sharing the message of Jesus with them. He devoted the remainder of his life to preaching the gospel. He was crucified because of that message. Of course, in the moments immediately following his denial of Jesus, he didn’t know any of this would happen. In fact, he probably felt like his whole world was ending.

Have you ever done something like that? Something that made you feel so terrible that you were certain nothing would ever be okay again? I bet that’s how Peter felt. Yet, we see that Jesus not only forgave him, he used him in a way that no one would have ever imagined.

Your mistakes, your sins, your moments that you wish you could take back do not count you out. In fact, in some cases, they qualify you. God uses them, and you, for His glory. Just like Peter, you and I can make the greatest comeback from our biggest blunder with God’s help; and all we have to do is trust Him with our mess.

Have you done something that you wish you could take back? Are you still holding on to the shame or guilt from that thing?

Give that shameful thing to God today, and accept His forgiveness and grace.
