Sweat Pants Kinda Love & Breakfast Churros

Revelation 21:3 (cev)

I heard a loud voice shout from the throne: God’s home is now with his people. He will live with them, and they will be his own. Yes, God will make his home among his people.

I’ve been married for almost 8 years – that’s a long time to love the same frustrating, amazing, annoying, incredibly sweet man. Ladies, you feel me? I mean, if the toilet seat goes up, it must go down, right?! Newton says so.

In that time, we’ve grown to know each other deeply, and our time of courtship is definitely a thing of the past – in a good way! Do you remember some of the things you used to do in the name of impressing your guy? “Oh, a salad for dinner sounds yummy, and so filling!” Or the underwear with the straps that couldn’t possibly go there?

Of course we still know how to show up and be romantic, but now, we’re all about that comfortable love. The kind where there’s no pressure for grand gestures daily, and we get to be ourselves. Where Friday nights can consist of dinner on the couch in sweats, and that’s so okay.

That’s the kind of relationship we can have with God, too. Last week, we talked about how God wants to be seen as our Husband, and the more I thought about that, the more I imagined what actual life with my husband is like. And it’s comfortable. It’s sweat pants and a movie. It’s no make-up and no frills. It’s not having to say the right thing, and sometimes, not saying anything at all.

While God is happy to share in our big days and weather our big storms, He’s just as happy to engage in that sweat pants kinda love with us. Because the thing that God has always desired is simply to be with us. When we go all the way back to Genesis, we can see the God created us because He wanted to. Before sin entered the world, He didn’t make us to do a whole lot of anything, other than just exist with Him and His creation.

So often, I think that my prayers have to have the perfect format and a bullet-point agenda. I stumble over my words as if I’m giving a nationwide speech. I feel like if I don’t have prepared topics that are worthy of God’s time, that I shouldn’t show up at all. But it’s just not true.

The book of Revelations is the last book in the Bible. In the beginning of the Bible, we saw that we were created to be with God. And in the end, we can see that God is coming to be with us. Scripture says that He’s coming to live with us. That means an intimate relationship where we share personal space. Where God sees us exactly as we are. Where we simply get to exist together. And that’s real love.

Do you find yourself “preparing” to spend time with God? What would happen if you just allowed God to come into your space, as you are? No fancy words or prayers, just spending time together?

Today, spend time with God organically. Talk to Him about whatever comes up in your heart and mind, or spend time together saying nothing at all.
