Cornbread Waffles

Loving People & Cornbread Waffles

Nehemiah 5:15 (erv)

But the governors who ruled before me made life hard for the people. The governors forced everyone to pay 1 pound of silver. They also made the people give them food and wine. The leaders under these governors also ruled over the people and made life even harder. But I respected and feared God, so I didn’t do things like that.

In the verses before, Nehemiah is talking about other rulers who used their positions and their power for self-gain. And he goes on to say that he could do those things too, but he chose not to because of his great respect for God.

What I love about this passage is that it’s not even about the people and Nehemiah’s respect or love for them, it’s about God. Nehemiah has great respect and love for God, so in turn, he respects and loves God’s people. God created them, and He loves them. Nehemiah was given a position of power because God trusted him, and he choose to use that power for good.

It’s easy to become frustrated and angry with other humans, believe me, I know that all too well. But in those times of frustration – the moments before we say the things we can’t take back or behave in a way that doesn’t mirror Jesus, we have to stop and continuously remind ourselves that our actions need to be based on our love for God first and foremost.

Do you struggle with separating God from His people? Matthew 25:40 says, “Then the king will answer, ‘The truth is, anything you did for any of my people here, you also did for me.’” How does this change your perspective about loving others?

For a servants heart.
