Hunger & Halloween Pancakes

Proverbs 27:7 (tpt)

When your soul is full, you turn down even the sweetest honey. But when your soul is starving, every bitter thing becomes sweet.

Last week, I was talking with a friend about what I desired in my relationship with the Lord. My first response to that question was, “Uhm, nothing really. I think I’m good with my reading the Bible and spending time in prayer.” It wasn’t until later that I realized that’s not the type of hunger I want to have when it comes to Jesus.

Indifference or contentment is not seeking the Lord. As a Christian, I believe that it’s our job to always be seeking Him and growing in Him, through Him, and with Him. When we reach a state of “ehhh, it’s fine how it is”, it probably means that something else is taking the place God deserves in terms of our desires.

Recently, my husband and I went to this restaurant that we’ve been excited to check out for months. It took forever to get reservations that aligned with our schedule, and when we finally did, they were for 8 PM. That’s super late for us. We operate more on a “Dinner at 6, snacks at 8, and fall asleep on the couch by 9” kinda schedule. But we really wanted to go, so we decided to really paint the town red and keep the late reservations.

The problem, is that we were super hungry by the time our normal dinner hour rolled around, and even though we were trying to wait, we decided to just have “a snack” to hold us over. A snack turned into a small dinner, and by the time we got to actual dinner, we weren’t super hungry. We ruined our appetites for the amazing food by filling up with the stuff we didn’t even want; the stuff that didn’t satisfy us.

When we will our minds and our lives with the things of this world instead of putting our energy and focus on a relationship with the Lord, we’re doing the same thing. We’re becoming full before we even get to the good stuff. We’re hungry, but instead of reaching for the ingredients to prepare a wholesome meal or waiting for the reservations and the amazing restaurant, we grab the potato chips and candy.

And the unfortunate part is that most of us don’t realize how unsatisfied and undernourished we really are. If we do, we go back to the same things that left us feeling that way in the first place, hoping that a little more will do the trick.

In order to reach the point of satisfaction and fulfillment, we have to stop trying to fill the spaces and satisfy the hunger with the quick, easy solutions. We have to go to the source of the good stuff; we have to wait for the honey.

Do you feel that you try to find satisfaction and fulfillment in something other than the Lord? What’s your experience been with that so far?

Ask the Lord to satisfy your heart and soul in the way that only He can.
