God is Love & Breakfast Brownies

1 John 4:10 (cev)

Real love isn’t our love for God, but his love for us. God sent his Son to be the sacrifice by which our sins are forgiven.

I talk a lot about not necessarily being able to feel God’s love. I pray about it more than I talk about it, and I experience it more than I pray about it. What I’m trying to say is that it happens a lot; the thoughts filled with doubt about God’s love for me.

It only recently dawned on me that I have no idea what love is, not really. I think I know what it is, but that’s only based on past relationships, movies, books, songs, and Hallmark greeting cards. But none of those things are the creator of love. God is the only Creator of all things, including love. He’s the reason we know about it, think about it, and desire it.

That means that God is the only One who gets to tell us what it means to be loved and what love is. For years, I was involved in an extremely abusive relationship, emotionally and physically. After it finally ended, I struggled with new relationships, and old ones, because I didn’t feel loved. My perception of what it meant to be loved was off, because I had accepted and and started to believe what someone else believed love was.

Although my story might be a bit more intense than most, we all do this in some capacity. We accept the love that we’re taught about in movies, that we’re told is real in books, and that we grow to expect based on what we see. But do any of us actually know what love is? What it was designed to be? What it was created to feel like and look like?

The Bible teaches us that God is love, and that we are only capable of love because He loved us first. So, instead of doubting God’s love, it’s time that I start to re-examine my perspective on love instead. God’s love for me, and for you, is a fact, not an opinion. Just because it might not look or feel how I think it’s supposed to doesn’t mean it’s not there. It’s time to reconcile the truth that it’s our ideas about love that skewed, not God’s love for us.

And God uses His Word to give us a perfect, detailed explanation of what love actually is. We can find this breakdown in 1 Corinthians 13:4-8. Incase you need a reminder, love is patient, love is kind. Love is not jealous. It does not brag. Love is not proud. Love is not selfish, and it’s not made angry easily. It does not remember wrongs. Love is never happy when others do wrong, but it is always happy with the truth. Love never gives up on people, and it never stops trusting. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, and endures all things. Because God says so.

Do you have any skewed beliefs or ideas about love? Are they based on any personal experiences? Can you identify what’s caused those beliefs about love?

For a clear understanding of how God desires for you to understand love.
