God is Kind & Banana Sushi Rolls

Genesis 3:22-23 (niv)

And the Lord God said, “The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and life forever.” So the Lord God banished him from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he had been taken.

At first glance, this sounds like pretty cruel punishment, doesn’t it? I remember the first time I read this verse, all I could think was, “It was only one mistake! They got kicked out for making ONE mistake?!” In fact, this is one of those verses that really sat with me and bothered me for awhile. When I was first learning about God’s character, this verse made me think that maybe God wasn’t that nice.

I spent a lot of time studying this verse, reading commentaries, and praying over it. Eventually, I found that this verse displayed the exact opposite of cruelty; this is one of those scriptures that really showcases God’s love and kindness.

We’ve all grown up in a world surrounded by sin, so while it may seem like “one mistake”, at the time, it was THE mistake; the first sin. The perfect, peaceful world that God created was now disrupted, forever. God loved us too much to allow us to spend eternity in a world that was now full of sin and brokenness. So He gave us another amazing gift; He kicked us out.

Right now, we’re all living in and with the consequences of sin, but God didn’t want them to be permanent. If He had allowed us to stay, and eat from the tree of life, we wouldn’t have the hope we have today for the beautiful, peaceful paradise that we’ll one day spend eternity in. Before the initial sin, evil still existed – we were simply protected from it. But God knew about it, which is why He said, “the man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil.”

Sometimes, it’s hard to grasp the magnitude of God’s kindness; but it’s displayed perfectly right here. God created us flawlessly and gave us everything, including Himself. We sinned against Him, hid from Him, and failed to accept responsibility for our actions. And although it must have been incredibly painful for Him, God did what was right for us, even in the midst of our failures. He created us to be with Him, and almost immediately, He had to send us away. But He did it because of His great love.

God always had a plan to bring us back to Himself; Jesus. And while that meant some time separated from the ones that He loves (us), God gave us that gift of an eternal, peaceful life.

What are some of the ways that God has shown you kindness? Write about them in your journal.

For the ability to identify God’s good works in everything; especially in the places it’s not immediately clear.
