Psalm 29:2 (nirv)
Praise the Lord for the glory that belongs to him. Worship the Lord because of his beauty and holiness.

Do you remember Mad Libs? They were a favorite of mine as a kid. As I got older, I developed a fear of flying. My husband and I always had a booklet of Mad Libs in our travel bag to distract me on our flights. Here’s a little Mad Lib I created about my typical prayer and worship.
Thank you for the __________ (good thing in my life).
Please help me with the __________ (challenging thing in my life).
I really want to __________ (goal/plan/idea). Can you show me how to accomplish that?
I’m calling this game “All About Me”.
Let’s check out my game in comparison to the scripture above. Praise the Lord for the glory that belongs to him. Worship the Lord because of his beauty and holiness. The word glory in Hebrew is kabad, which means heaviness or weight. In a totally good way. It’s not often you praise someone for their heaviness. I can imagine my husband trying to be sweet and saying something really inappropriate right about now. Anyway… God’s weight. It’s His importance. The space He fills (or should). It’s about who He is. The Hebrew word for holiness is qadash, which means apartness or sacredness. Again, this is about who He is.
You probably noticed that nowhere in that scripture does it talk about worship in regards to me, or you, or anyone other than God for that matter. Truly, worship has never really felt very genuine to me. I’ve never understood the people that fill the rows, eyes closed, arms raised, appearing to have been transported somewhere else. I’ve been uncomfortable in public (and also private) worship experiences because I don’t really get it. I don’t feel it. I typically use that time to take an inventory of my life; what’s going well, and which areas could be added to the Mad Lib game.
God does good things in our lives; really good things. And gratitude certainly has an important place – but that’s not the heartbeat of worship. We worship God because of who He is, not what He does. We worship because of what’s already been given, not what He gives.
I’m finally seeing that I’ve been looking inward while I attempt to worship. So it’s no wonder that it feels phony. I can’t worship Him while looking at me. True worship is the act of seeing and recognizing Him, all of His beauty and holiness.

Does worship feel natural for you? Why or why not? What ways can you seek to improve your worship process based on what you learned today?

For eyes that look upward instead of inward.
