Freedom to Choose & Blueberry Vanilla Mug Cake

About that time Jesus went off to a mountain to pray, and he spent the whole night there. The next morning he called his disciples together and chose twelve of them to be his apostles.


Having a really big decision or choice to make can be a scary place to be in. So often, I want complete freedom and control, yet when I have it, I don’t know what to do. I don’t love the responsibility that comes with that freedom, and I find myself lost and alone when I’m at a fork in the road.

Jesus was completely human; which means He dealt with so many of the same trials and struggles that we do. Some of them really big and painful, and some of them weren’t quite as physically challenging as they were mentally. Making a decision is one of those things that can be incredibly difficult mentally. And Jesus walked through it while He was here on earth.

We can see the way that Jesus handled the choices He was given; He brought them to God in prayer. This sets such an amazing example for us because it teaches us how to approach the big decisions that we face in our own lives.

By sharing the responsibility with God, Jesus knew that He would be guided toward the right choice. And He also knew that it would keep Him from asking those haunting “what if” questions later down the road, like when Judas betrayed Him. Even though God gave Jesus complete freedom to choose, Jesus gave some of that back to God to share in the decision and lead Him to the right choices.

While it’s difficult, I’ve been trying to remember Jesus’ approach and attempting to release some of the control I have over the choices in my life, remembering that I’m not the One who truly knows best, but I have unlimited access to Him.

  • 1 scoop vanilla protein powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 tablespoon coconut flour
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sweetener
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened almond milk
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup blueberries


  1. Spray a mug with non-stick spray
  2. Combine all ingredients and transfer to mug
  3. Microwave for 1 minute
  4. If necessary, microwave for an additional 30 seconds at a time until the center is cooked through
  5. Top with a spoonful of greek yogurt (optional)
