Faith Over Fear & The Basic Breakfast Sandwich

Nehemiah 6:12 (niv)

I realized that God had not sent him, but that he had prophesied against me because Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him.

Read

In the book of Nehemiah, Nehemiah learned that the wall of Jerusalem had been broken down. But Nehemiah wasn’t living in Jerusalem, he was working for the king. He felt such a burden about the broken down wall that he requested permission from the king to go to Jerusalem and rebuild the wall.

The king gives Nehemiah permission to go, and he sets off to complete the work he has on his heart. He assembled a team and got to work; the building of the wall was underway. But not everyone was happy about it. Two Ammonites, Tobiah and Sanballat, were especially angry about the wall and the work Nehemiah was doing, and they put a plan in motion to stop it.

They tried many times to get Nehemiah to meet with them so that they could kill him, but Nehemiah was wise to their plans. Finally, they paid a man named Shemaiah to lie to Nehemiah; trying to trick him into hiding in the Temple by telling him someone was planning to kill him. That’s when Nehemiah responded with the verse we see above.

The message of fear isn’t from God. Nehemiah knew this, because he knew God. But if he hadn’t, he may have fallen for the trap and been lured into the Temple to be killed.

The enemy uses fear because he knows what a great motivator it is. A seed of doubt and fear can be planted so quickly if we don’t have a constant, ongoing relationship with God and an understanding of who He is and how He operates; out of love. God doesn’t plant fears, he gives strength.

1 John 4:18 tells us, “If we really love God, we will not be afraid of him. We cannot love him completely and also be afraid. We would only be afraid of God if we thought that he would punish us. So, if someone is afraid that God will punish them, it shows that they do not completely know God’s love” (EASY).

When you feel fear, it’s important to examine where that fear is coming from. Who is speaking fear, worry, or anxiousness into your life? You may have to continually tell yourself that God doesn’t use fear as a method to change hearts, fulfill plans, or do good works. He will certainly discipline and correct us, and He’ll often straighten our paths if they become crooked, but He won’t inflict fear.

Fear and anxiousness play only one positive role in the life of a Christian; testing your faith. When we’re presented with fear, we can fall into the traps that are being laid for us by the enemy. Or, we can do as Nehemiah did; examine the situation, measure it against our understanding of who God is and the truth from the Word, and choose to be faithful instead of fearful.

Write

Reflect on a time that you allowed fear to stop you from pursuing God’s plans for your life or allowed you to believe something that was untrue. What did you learn from that experience? How will you approach the situation differently the next time you’re faced with fear?

Pray

For a specific fear you’re facing; that it might be covered in faith and handed over to God.

Tips & Tools

This is oh-so-easy! It’s been done a million different times by every fast food restaurant you can think of; but I promise, this one will save you some major calories and fuel you with real food! I used a plain Ezekiel english muffin for this sandwich, which is typically found in the freezer section of the grocery store. If you have a panini maker and would prefer to melt the sandwich together using that instead of the microwave, you can skip the step of toasting your muffin and let it toast at the same time in the panini maker.
