Faith in Action & German Chocolate Pancakes

Mark 4:40 (erv)

He said to his followers, “Why are you afraid? Do you still have no faith?”

Faith. It’s a tricky one, isn’t it? For me, faith has different degrees. Do I have faith that God is real? Yes. Do I believe that Jesus died to offer us eternal life? Sure do. Am I sure that God is good? Absolutely. Do I live like it? Well….

How is is that we can be so sure of something, yet our actions don’t line up with those beliefs? I guess that’s part of being human. And we don’t just struggle with this in the area of religion. It seems to apply to many areas of our lives.

We know that healthy food will provide healthier bodies, but we continue to eat from the drive-thru and the junk food aisles. We know that the risk of developing cancer is 23 times higher for smokers, yet 14 out of every 100 adults continues to smoke (CDC).

It turns out that what we know doesn’t always change our behaviors. As is the case with faith. Having faith and living by faith are completely different things. They produce different actions, different outcomes, and change the way we experience God.

As Christians, we can’t just have faith. We have to practice faith intentionally. Francis Chan, author of Crazy Love, talks about faith this way: “But God doesn’t call us to be comfortable, He calls us to trust him so completely that we are unafraid to put ourselves in situations where we will be in trouble if he doesn’t come through.”

The more we practice faith in action, the stronger that faith gets. And it won’t always be easy, in fact, it might not ever be. But through those actions of faith, we’ll not only grow personally, but our trust in God will grow as well.

Do your actions line up with your faith? In what ways can you take steps to re-align your actions to match your faith?

For faith that is felt, understood, and reflected in your actions.
