Creamy Panini

Directions & Creamy Panini

John 15:4 (cev)

Stay joined to me, and I will stay joined to you. Just as a branch cannot produce fruit unless it stays joined to the vine, you cannot produce fruit unless you stay joined to me.

Has anyone ever tried to give you verbal directions? Follow this road for 1/2 a mile. Got it. At the intersection, turn right. Okay. Then drive 3/4 mile, a mile and a quarter at most, and veer left at the second fork in the road. It’s right after you pass the mini mart, but if you see a red barn, you went too far. After the fork, you’ll take a round-about onto a one way street heading southwest…

All the while, I’m just smiling and nodding, while mentally planning to use my GPS instead of trying to figure all of that out. Trying to learn and remember the directions for the entire trip beforehand seems crazy when we have a step-by-step guide traveling right alongside us.

Recently, I was wondering how many times I’ve prayed the prayer, “Lord, show me what you want me to do with my life.”

Isn’t asking God for our life’s plan and purpose kind of the same as asking for directions for an entire trip? He’s given us Himself as a GPS. As we’re approaching our next move, He calls it out to us. When we’ve made a wrong turn, He gently reminds us of the direction we should be going.

When we think we know where we’re going, we start to run ahead. We assume that God will catch up with us. But what about the pit stop He had planned to rest and have lunch together? What about the breaks He knows we need? What about the beautiful detour to stop and gaze at the Grand Canyon or Niagara Falls? When we run ahead of God, we don’t stay connected to Him. And our lives to start to feel as if they lack meaning, because without Him, we simply can’t and won’t produce fruit.

But when we allow God to give us the next steps that we need, we’ll ensure that we stay beside Him. He knows when each and every turn, detour, and road block is coming up. He won’t tell us too early so that we forget or become anxious from the anticipation. And He won’t tell us too late either.

Are you a planner by nature? Do you have the desire to know the entire route before you’ve pulled out of the driveway? If this is you, where do you think that desire stems from? What do you fear will happen if you decide to take it one turn at a time?

Instead of asking the Lord to reveal your life’s plan, consider praying that He reveal today’s plan. Ask for His guidance and direction as you move through the next 24 hours.
