Debt Free & Loaded Sweet Potato

Ephesians 1:7 (erv)

In Christ we are made free by his blood sacrifice. We have forgiveness of sins because of God’s rich grace.

Life can get really expensive, right? When I open my monthly statements that shows me all the details of my student loans, I get a little sick. That little pit comes in my stomach as I realize that it will probably take me the rest of forever to pay this off.

College is probably the most expensive thing I’ve ever purchased, other than a house. And that price haunts me. Maybe you feel the same way about a specific debt in your life; education, housing, medical bills. Whatever that purchase is, think about it for a second. Let’s go on a little journey of our imaginations together.

Think about that sickening number, the large payments month after month, the total balance that seems to never move; now imagine that someone handed you a check for that total amount. Whatever you owe has been completely paid off; for free.

Hallelujah, right?! This is great news! Now, you get to live a life of freedom. You don’t have to slave away to continue making that payment each month. You can put your money toward something else. You can quit that terrible job and really pursue your passions.

But, you don’t. You continue to work a job you don’t like, even though your debt has been paid. You continue to mail in a check to that student loan company or debt collector, even though your balance has been zero for weeks, or months, or even years. Why?

Because you don’t really believe you’re actually free from that debt. Or you’ve been suffocated and trapped by that burden for so long that you don’t know how to behave differently.

Friends, this is what it’s like when we accept Jesus into our lives but we don’t change our beliefs. We continue to pay for a debt that’s already been paid. In this scenario the debt collectors are the enemy; the bad guys. Isn’t it bad enough that they had to be paid once? But they won’t stop you from continuing to send that check every month. They won’t think twice about accepting your payment, even though your balance is zero.

The enemy loves it when we continue to live a life of slavery, even once we’ve been saved. The goods news, though, is that we don’t have to. At any time, we can stop sending that check. Do me (and you) a favor – right now. Walk over to the mirror and take a long, hard look. The person that’s staring back at you is completely free from guilt, shame, sin, and death. You’re free. You no longer have to fight to get by. You’ve got a clean slate, sister. And God’s prepared something incredible to fill it with. Today, believe that.

Can you think of any “debts” that continue to burden you, even though they’ve been paid? Write about them in your journal today.

Ask God to help you understand and believe in the complete and total freedom that His death has given you.
