Blessings on Blessings & Cinnamini Waffles

1 Thessalonians 5:18 (ceb)

Give thanks in every situation because this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.

As I’m writing this, I’m sitting in a hotel room, in the middle of nowhere Missouri, that smells a lot like moldy towels. I have a laundry list of complaints; I’ll spare you – my husband got to hear them all though. But as I was speaking them out loud, I realized how silly they were.

They were superficial problems at best; food that’s available, dog annoyances, simply being tired and cranky. And in that very moment, I realized how much I have to be thankful for. Not just in this situation of moving across the country, but in every situation that I’m facing.

Because Jesus died on the Cross, the bad days become good and the good days become better. Even when we’re in the midst of struggling through major trials or minor annoyances, we’re saved. Our eternities don’t include those challenges. And even though they often don’t feel temporary, they are.

I know how hard it can be to stop and give thanks when things aren’t going well. And I also know how hard it is to remember to stop and give thanks when things are going really well. But as we grow closer to God, and we learn to walk with Him, we also learn to praise Him for both the temporary blessings, and the eternal ones.

I think that it’s really easy to look around without seeing anything “good”. How can you praise God when it all just seems so bad? That’s when we praise Him for the eternal gifts He’s given us. Jesus’ death on the Cross reminds us that there’s always a reason to be thankful.

What can you focus your gratitude on today? Is it something temporary in this lifetime, or an eternal blessing? Maybe both?

Spend time thanking God for all the temporary and eternal blessings in your life.
