A Hidden Agenda & Strawberry Shortcake Short Stack

John 10:27 (niv)

Yes, God is more than ready to overwhelm you with every form of grace, so that you will have more than My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.

Almost all year, I’ve felt different when I open the Word; off somehow. I don’t mean to say that my time in the Word is less meaningful, but it kind of is. I started to notice that I didn’t feel as connected to my daily reading a few months ago, and then while unpacking from the move, I started looking for my journal. When I couldn’t find it, I realized it’s because I don’t actually have one right now, and I haven’t for months.

My previous journal ran out of blank pages back in April – more than 2 months ago. And I haven’t started a new one. Why? Why was I feeling so disconnected from the Word that I haven’t even required a journal to organize my thoughts? Because I was approaching His Word with my own will and agenda instead of seeking His.

I love writing FaithFull Mornings, and I do believe that it’s in God’s will for me to be right here, right now, writing this. But, I’ve been approaching it all wrong. In the beginning, my writings came from those journal entries. From hours spent in the Word, and thoughts poured out onto paper, that were than edited and formatted to fit this screen.

But somewhere along the way, I stopped listening for and looking for the voice of God, and I started opening His Word only to write my own. The Bible is one of God’s primary means of communication with us. When we open it up, His voice should come through louder than anything else. But it’s not always a magic book; I mean that God’s Word doesn’t always jump right off the page at us if our hearts/minds aren’t in the right place or seeking the right things.

Sometimes, it does. Sometimes, God uses His word to overwhelm us and lead us in a way that feels almost uncontrollable. But other times, I think He waits patiently to speak until we’re ready to listen. And above all, this year-long project is about growing closer to Him; for me and for everyone who reads it. So I have to be honest and humble enough to admit than I haven’t been listening.

I’ve been “skimming the Word” with my own hidden agenda. And that’s okay – not because it’s right or because I’m getting the most out of my time, but because I’m already forgiven for all of it. All of the mistakes, the prideful choices, the attempts at seeking my own will instead of His. It’s all wiped away. And as soon as I realize it, bring it to Him, and begin to honestly seek His voice again, He’ll reset my path and lead me in the right way.

He’ll do the same for you, too. So if you’ve found yourself reading the Word without really listening, it’s okay to start fresh, today, in this very moment. It’s okay to close the devotional that you started with the wrong intentions, or to reset your expectations for your time in daily communion with Him. It’s okay to surrender your thoughts, hopes, and dreams to Him today, and once again, start to seek His voice. It’s okay.

Do you ever find yourself reading the Word with your own agenda in mind? Are there any specific areas that you tend to do this with?

For God’s will and wisdom to be revealed clearly in His Word today.
