A Heart for Others & Mini Blueberry Banana Muffins

Nehemiah 5:5-6 (erv)

We are as good as the others. Our sons are as good as their sons. But we will have to sell our sons and daughters as slaves. Some of us have already had to sell our daughters as slaves. There is nothing we can do. We have already lost our fields and vineyards. Other people own them now.” When I heard their complaints, I was very angry.

At this time, the Jewish people were being treated unfairly. Nehemiah was certainly one of those people who had heard and felt the cries of others, which is evident by verse 6.  “When I heard their complaints, I was very angry.”

This immediately stood out to me as someone who is listening and paying attention to others. So many of us wander through the world, only thinking about ourselves. We’re only focused on our problems, and we ignore those around us.

After reading this passage, I found myself asking, “When is the last time I set out to help people?” In fact, most days, I usually avoid eye contact or look away from the people asking for help. When is the last time that I heard someone cry out? I mean really heard them?

Is this one of the first steps in loving others? Is this one of the ways to become more like Jesus? Had Nehemiah not heard their cries, he would have never been able to help them. God might not have used him to make an impact on the world, on the future, on eternity. His story would have looked different. And the lives of the ones he touched may not have been impacted in a positive way, either.

Does having a heart for others come naturally for you, or is this something you have to work a bit harder at? What are some ways that you can be the hands, feet, and voice of Jesus in your life today?

Ask the Lord to help you listen for and look for His people who are hurting and need help in a way that you can offer them.
